CSA for Tuesday, July 30th

Being off the Web for ten days really put a kink in things!  Sorry for no newsletter last week!  I'm still a wee bit miffed it took our service provider ten days to fix their equipment> bygones.....

Anyhoo, down on the farm there is really starting to be too much rain and not enough sun.  Things are developing slowly and some things, like summer squashes, are showing signs of rot in the fruit!  Peppers and tomatoes are not setting fruit very quickly and what fruit has set seems to just sit in limbo.  Admittedly, lettuces are doing well in the cool and moist conditions.

Because we were off line last week there was no newsletter, so our growing partners Amanda and Ed did not get 'props' for growing those lovely cabbage.  They've provided again this week, cabbage for everybody!  Love Amanda's 'recipe' for growing gorgeous cabbage without chemicals:  she dusts them with a mix of flour, cayenne pepper and chili pepper seeds to ward off those nasty cabbage moths!  We were hearing some great things that people were doing with cabbage last week including a wide variety of coleslaw recipes and a cabbage roll casserole or lasagna using cabbage leaves instead of pasta.

Included in your box this week is an order form for a great little product we ran across at Global Market.  Marketed locally, these mixes are dairy and gluten free and easy-peasy!  If you're interested we will give it two weeks and then put in a group order.  Email if you have any questions!

So, in the boxes this week:

FULL SHARES:  Large cabbage, large bag of green beans, small bag of purple or yellow beans, mix of multiplier and baby yellow onions, summer squash, large bag 'Red Sails' leaf lettuce, medium bag of 'Grand Rapids' leaf lettuce, bundle of Romaine lettuce, two pints of raspberries with most of you getting a pint of Mammoth and a pint of Boyne, bag of new Norland red potatoes.

PART SHARES:  Medium cabbage, large bag mixed purple and yellow beans, multiplier onions, summer suqash, medium bag of 'Red Sails' leaf lettuce, medium bag of 'Grand Rapids' leaf lettuce, small bundle of Romaine, 2 pints raspberries, bag of new Norland red potatoes.

SINGLE SHARES:  Small cabbage, small bag of green beans, onions, summer squash, small bag of 'Red Sails' leaf lettuce, small bag of 'Grand Rapids' leaf lettuce, two pints raspberries, medium bag of new Norland red potatoes.

CSA for Thursday, July 18, 2013

'Red Sails' lettuce.
A nice, light shower last night - didn't really water the gardens in any big way but it's keeping the dust down and it was a nice cool start to the morning!  We shared this great link in Tuesday's newsletter but thought we'd share it again: some great tips on keeping a wide assortment of fruits and veggies fresh.  A great review for old and new members as we start the season!  Don't know if you saw on the Facebook page but we acquired a new tool yesterday:  a commercial size salad spinner!  Should help to get you drier greens, but they'll still need another rinse when you get them home....they're pretty 'fresh from the field' and we do rinse them but, especially after rain, may still have a wee bit of soil on them!  One of our big 'things' about keeping your share of the harvest is get things out of plastic bags - especially items we have rinsed such as salad greens.  Water + plastic is just a home for mold!

If you're not familiar with them, garlic scapes are in all the boxes this week.  This is a one-time thing using the flowering stems of the garlic.  It's a nice, fresh garlic taste best used raw.  If you want to cook with them in something like a stir-fry, finish your dish, remove from the heat then add the scapes.  They're awesome mushed up with a soft cheese for a garlic/cheese spread or dip.  They also make an excellent pesto, here's a link here.  It's super on pasta or toast!

Not a huge harvest to start the season, but the lettuces are very nice this year!  More goodies are coming quickly now.....if anyone wants to help the next couple of weeks we could really use some volunteers to help pick raspberries and beans the morning of pick up (or Tuesday, if you don't mind to harvest for our other families).  There's always bonuses for volunteers.....

So, this week:

FULL SHARES:  Large bag of 'Grand Rapids' loose leaf lettuce (the bright green frilly stuff!), large bag of 'Red Sails' loose leaf lettuce, large bag of 'Buttercrunch' Bibb lettuce, red onions, radishes, garlic scapes.

PART SHARES:  Medium bag of 'Grand Rapids' loose leaf lettuce, medium bag of 'Red Sails' loose leaf lettuce, medium bag of 'Buttercrunch' Bibb lettuce, red onions, radishes, garlic scapes.

SINGLE SHARES:  Small bag of 'Grand Rapids' loose leaf lettuce, small bag 'Red Sails' loose leaf lettuce, small bag of 'Buttercrunch' Bibb lettuce, red onions, radishes, garlic scapes.

Enjoy!

CSA for Tuesday, July 16, 2013

Michelle, our helper this year, cleaning onions.  Michelle
is an ACC Hort student doing her practicum.  You will
probably meet her sometime soon at Global Market on
Saturday mornings!
The first CSA pick-up of our season: the latest start ever for us!  Just wanted things to get a little bigger, have a little more ready!  It's not a huge box by any means, but it will get better every week.  Next week the raspberries should be ready to pick so if anyone is interested in volunteering a little time on a Tuesday or Thursday morning to come help pick - that would be awesome!  (Always bonuses for volunteers....)

This seems like the perfect time for a little refresher on keeping fresh veggies fresh.  Here's a great link to storing your haul of fruit and vegetables!  Our own 'big' piece of advice is get everything out of plastic bags as soon as possible or open the plastic bags for good air circulation.  You're getting super-fresh food but some wilt is possible even in the time it sits waiting for you to pick it up!

Everyone is getting garlic scapes today - a one-time treat!  We love garlic and we always say the scapes are what gets us through until the garlic itself is ready!  They have a mild, fresh garlic taste when raw - cooked they lose that flavor and taste a bit more like asparagus.  They are awesome chopped into salads, into something like tuna salad or mushed up with a soft cheese for a dip or spread.  If you do want to use them in a stir fry or something, fully cook the stir fry, remove from the heat then add the chopped scapes just before serving.  They make an awesome pesto: here's a recipe here.

We've taken fully half of the present radish crop; Thursday members will get the other half.  It was one of a few areas that suffered some serious flooding and wash-outs in the storms of a month ago.  Over half the plot of radishes was ruined, so once we pull them all on Thursday, Farmer Man will till the area and we're going to replant!  We have a few areas that have suffered damage in the heavy rains of June.  We've had some serious losses in the tomatoes, I'm sorry to say, but what survived is doing well now!  I am also sad to report the the goat mommas got away on me one evening and managed to eat almost all the groundcherries before I could get the ladies back under control!  Summer squash is coming nicely and the beans have flowered like crazy and should be ready for picking in a couple of weeks!

So, in the boxes today:

FULL SHARES:  Large bag 'Grand Rapids' loose leaf lettuce, large bag 'Red Sails' loose leaf lettuce, large bag 'Buttercrunch' bibb lettuce, garlic scapes, red onions, radishes.

PART SHARES:  Mediium bag 'Grand Rapids' loose leaf lettuce, medium bag 'Red Sails' loose leaf lettuce, medium bag 'Buttercrunch' bibb lettuce, garlic scapes, red onions, radishes.

SINGLE SHARES:  Small bag 'Grand Rapids' loose leaf lettuce, small bag 'Red Sails' loose leaf lettuce, small bag 'Buttercrunch' bibb lettuce, garlic scapes, red onions, radishes.

Local Perfume!

We're really excited about this: we'll be offering locally crafted perfume at the Global Market, along with our soaps and natural skin care.  Not local essences, sorry to say, but essential oils from around the world formulated into unique colognes here in Brandon!

The colognes are the work of our friend and CSA member John.  It's something he's been working on for a long time.  So far, he's introduced two: Dauntless is essential oils of Lime, Lavender and Vanilla with a 'spicy base' of Patchouli, Cinnamon and Frankincense.  Memories of Earth is a woody perfume with Patchouli, Cinnamon and Sandalwood with a 'sweet wrapping' of Ylang Ylang.  They are both lovely and quite unisex!  We'll have sample bottles of the market, for you to try the fragrances.  Pictured are John's limited edition, hand-made copper bottles.  There is only one of each copper bottle per cologne.

John is working on other goodies.  He's also been playing with distilling his own, locally sourced essences!  Essential oil of saskatoon?  How about wild plum?  It will be interesting to see what he comes up with over the summer!  He'll be opening an Etsy shop which will be called CyborgianSecrets!  Come check it out at the Global Market; we're there Fridays 4 - 8 PM and Saturday mornings 9 AM to 1 PM!
